Review SPIG / Ape Escape Price: $14.99

Review Ape Escape / SPIG:

What's more fun than a barrel of opposable-thumbed simians? How about the silly-but challenging-Ape Escape? While not the first game to offer enhanced control with Sony's dual-stick analog controller, Ape Escape is the first game to require either an analog or dual shock controller to play. That requirement ensures that players will have full control of their hero, Spike. One stick moves Spike in any direction, while the other swings his monkey-catching devices. In Ape Escape, a circus monkey named Specter stumbles upon a scientist's prototype intelligence-enhancing helmet, turning him into an evil monkey genius. As Spike, the professor's young friend, you must travel through time to clean up all of the monkeys Specter has sent back in his attempt to repopulate the world. If that's not enough to make you laugh, then chasing his goofy monkey minions as they scurry from your clutches will certainly tickle your funny bone. You'll discover a variety of gadgets to help you in your quest, including monkey radar, a slingshot, and a propeller for flying. Spanning 25 huge levels, Ape Escape is approachable for novices, and offers added challenges for veteran gamers. One such challenge is to lure a dinosaur near a rocky cliff, and then jar the monkey off his back and into your net. Note: no monkeys were harmed in the creation of this game. [+]
-Jeff Young Pros: Unique control scheme brings new challenge to the PlayStation Massive game has plenty of replay value Cons: Unique control scheme requires some ramp-up time.

Review Frogger / Hasbro Interactive:

The classic arcade game Frogger snatched more than a few quarters back in the '80s. Hasbro's smash hit comes home with an entirely new look and sound. You'll hop through nine gaming worlds and dozens of levels in a new 3-D-based gaming environment. The game begins in familiar territory as the first levels are faithful 3-D re-creations of the classic arcade game. However, as you begin to progress deeper into the game, you'll find new areas that are equally challenging. Whether or not you are a fan of the original game, Frogger stands on its own as a modern-day favorite. This title has consistently ranked among the top-selling home video games since its release. - Brett Atwood Pros: Based on the arcade hit Dozens of game levels Cons: May not appeal to some hardcore gamers.

Review Activision Classics / Activision Inc. ACTIVISION CLASSICS:

GREAT GAME, LOTS OF GAMES AND LOTS OF FUN. GREAT REPLAY VALUE. A COLLECTION OF ACTIVISION CLASSIC GAMES FOR THE ATARI 2600 (SONY PLAYSTATION CD-ROM VIDEO GAME VERSION) For those of you with fond memories of the Atari 2600-the granddaddy of home video game systems-this retro collection of first-rate titles from Activision is a must-have. This comprehensive disc features a whopping 30 games, including hits such as Pitfall, one of the best games ever made for the Atari 2600, and lesser-known (with good reason) titles such as Cosmic Commuter. As an added bonus, you can listen to audio CDs during gameplay. We recommend music from the early 1980s for the full "turn back the clock" effect. But if your video gaming experience doesn't date back to the early Reagan era, you should probably take a pass on A Collection of Activision Classic Games for the Atari 2600. By today's standards, the Atari 2600 is about as technologically dated as you can get, and the rudimentary gameplay and primitive graphics and sounds of its games aren't likely to win over any new fans. -Joe Hon Pros: Comprehensive collection of first-rate Atari 2600 games Ability to listen to audio CDs while playing games Cons: Little to no appeal outside of older fans of video games.

Review You Don't Know Jack / Playstation:

You Don't Know Jack, a popular and irreverent trivia game previously available only on the Internet and computers, has come to the PlayStation. At seven or 21 questions in length, this game is fast, furious, and difficult. Every subject imaginable from pop culture to math is covered through five types of questions: multiple choice, impossible (some very random facts), ThreeWay, DisOrDat, and Jack Attack. ThreeWay questions require you to buzz in when the correct answer is highlighted among three onscreen choices, while DisOrDat asks you to correctly group words into two or more categories while the clock ticks away. The game gets particularly heated during Jack Attack mode, which challenges gamers to buzz in when they see a word or phrase that matches a specific clue. Reading fast and buzzing in quickly are beneficial skills. Although the designers didn't add much in the way of graphics or extras for this version, there are two discs full of questions to avoid repetition. Some phrasings and topics aren't suitable for the pre-teen and younger players because they consist of bodily functions, profanity, or sex. Up to three contestants can play, but you'll need a Multi Tap (sold separately). -Carrie Bell Pros: Hit PC game comes to the PlayStation Up to 3 players and 2 CDs worth of questions Challenges knowledge on a variety of subjects without being boring Cons: No improvements over the PC version.

Review Crash Bash / Vivendi Universal:

1-4 PLAYERS CRASH AND HIS FRIENDS ARE BACK IN A KNOCK DOWN DRAG OUT ARENA RUMBLE. GET READY TO RACE RUMBLE JUMP THROW AND BATTLE IT OUT. With Crash Bash, the PlayStation finally has received its official party game in the vein of Mario Party and Sonic Shuffle. Up to four players can engage in 30 minigames, provided that one of those players owns a Multitap accessory. The games are almost as simple as the minigames that are found in Combat for the old Atari. There's Crash Ball, a four-way game of pong, and Desert Fox, in which the game characters go after each other in tanks. Adventure mode even includes boss battles in minigame form. The beauty of Crash Bash is that anyone-and I mean anyone-can pick it up and play it, with virtually no instruction. On the other hand, playing against computer opponents is pointless. Without friends to liven things up, the premise gets old in no time. [+]
The graphics and sounds share the same cartoonish quality of the previous Crash games, with playable bad guys. There's some graphical choppiness in multiplayer mode, but looks aren't the point of this one, anyway. -Robb Guido Pros: Easy to pick up and play Thirty different minigames, most of which are fun when played with or against friends Cons: Hard to enjoy without a Multitap and four players Crash Bash is a multievent party game in which four people can play several minigames as characters from the Crash Bandicoot series. Characters include Coco, Brio, Dingodile, Tiny, and Neo Cortex. The games are organized from a central hub world from which spokes lead to different levels. Games include pong, in which players defend one side of the screen, and a pogo-stick game, in which players hop to change the color of squares on a board by landing on them, then earn points by collecting boxes. Another game places characters on the backs of polar bears as they try to ram each other off the sides of an iceberg, with variants that include melting ice and playfield angles that change with your location. Each game features variations; some allow for two-player teams.

Review Namco's Museum Vol. 3 / Namco NAMCO VOL. 3:

SIX GAMES IN ONE. GALAXIAN, MS. PAC-MAN, POLE POSITION 2, DIG DUG, PHOZON, AND THE TOWER OF DRUAGA. The main attraction on this volume has to be Dig-Dug. For you youngins out there, the game features a little guy with an air pump (Dig-Dug) who digs underground tunnels searching for Pooka and Fygar, two crazy-looking monsters who eat Dig-Dugs like they're going out of style. The object is simple - find all the Pookas and Fygars and pump them full of air until they explode. The game is completely addictive and may be enough reason by itself to pick up the package. Ms. [+]
Pac-Man was the insanely popular sequel to Pac-Man, and it added several different mazes to the game, as well as adding a female character in the hope of dragging women of the 80s into arcades. It worked, and Ms. Pac-Man was nearly as big a hit as the original, which only added to the rolling keg of fury that the entire Pac-Man series encompassed. From the makers of Soul Calibur comes a tour of the ancient days of gaming. For those who remember Ms. Pac-Man and Atari, for those who loved Dig-Dug, and those of you who spent way too many quarters on Galaxian, this little treasure is for you. While it does contain some forgettable titles such as Phozon, a deadly boring puzzle game, and the Tower of Druaga, a sad, sad attempt at a top-down role-playing game, Namco Museum Vol. 3 is worth its price for the addictive classics alone. Pole Position II is also included, and, unlike modern racing games where you can knock opposing racers out of the way with a quick side swipe, Pole Position II's car explodes at the slightest contact. This was too much of a habit to break, but the nostalgia alone can be worth the effort. Although this is a fun trip into video game history, younger gamers could be bored due to the low-tech nature of the package. But parents of the new video game generation should feel free to plug this into their child's PlayStation and say aloud, "When I was your age. " -Allen Stewart Pros: Memorable classics such as Ms. Pac-Man, Galaxian, and Dig-Dug A save high scores function The classics are still really addictive and fun Cons: Has a few forgettable titles such as Phozon and Tower of Druaga Young players won't appreciate this selection.

Review Wheel of Fortune / Not Available slus-00683gh-99164:

Get ready to spin that wheel! Vanna White is your hostess in this home version of TV's popular game show. Compete head-to-head with an opponent or against the computer's video contestants to score points and win big. Gameplay is similar to the hit TV program. Contestants must guess the correct letters to slowly uncover a surprise word or phrase. Each spin of the wheel determines the dollar value of a correct guess. You can also buy vowels to help you solve a puzzle. This game contains hundreds of unique phrases and words to guess, which ensures that you'll return to play numerous times. There have been many home versions of Wheel of Fortune over the years, but this version boasts gameplay that is most faithful to the original televised version. The celebrity presence of hostess Vanna White adds an element of legitimacy to the game, but her canned commentaries do get old quickly. Where's Pat Sajak when you need him? -Brett Atwood Pros: Hundreds of unique puzzles to solve Faithful reproduction of the hit TV series Cons: Vanna White irritates after prolonged exposure.

Review Namco / Ms. Pac-Man Maze Madness Price: $29.81

Review Ms. Pac-Man Maze Madness / Namco:

Ms. Pac-Man makes her return to the screen in Ms. Pac-Man Maze Madness. Explore 180 mazes throughout four worlds. While the environment has moved from 2-D to 3-D, the game controls have remained true to the original arcade game-only the directional pad is used. Pick up power pellets to chomp on ghosts and new enemies, such as centipedes, Neander-Pacs, and baby dragons. Up to four players can engage in a variety of games, which include Ghost Tag, in which three players are ghosts, and one player is Ms. Pac-Man; and Dot Mania, in which players compete to eat the most dots in a maze.

Review Jaleco / Tetris Plus Price: $119.75

Review Tetris Plus / Jaleco:

Most attempts to tamper with the basic gameplay of Tetris have fallen flat on their faces, but Tetris Plus is actually a decent take on the timeless classic. You can tackle a basic solo game of Tetris, challenge a friend in two-player mode, or go directly to the best portion of the game: puzzle mode. In puzzle mode, players control blocks as they descend from the top to the bottom of the screen. As they fall, you can spin blocks so that they land next to corresponding colors at the bottom of the screen. Gameplay is just like the original only with a few major twists. The bin that holds the pieces at the bottom of the screen starts out partially filled, while a little professor character climbs on top of the stack. Your job is to clear lines of blocks so that the professor can reach the exit at the bottom of the bin before a spiked ceiling smacks him in the head. Two players can also duke it out in puzzle mode, sending cleared lines to their opponent's bin. This isn't the best version of Tetris we've ever played, but it does still manage to offer a lot of entertainment for its low price. -T. [+]
Byrl Baker Pros: Several types of play Good two-player mode Cons: Mediocre graphics.

Review Um Jammer Lammy / Sony Computer Entertainment:

Rock out with this innovative sequel to the hip-hop rhythm game Parappa the Rapper. This time the action centers around Lammy, a grunge guitar-playing lamb with her own rock band. Lammy is late for her latest performance with Milkcan, the band she fronts with kooky sidekicks Katy Kat and Masan. To get to the gig, Lammy must successfully strum her guitar through seven cartoon levels. Each level contains a unique music video that requires superior guitar-playing skills. Lammy must master multiple styles of music, including heavy metal, pop, and punk. Superior musicians will be rewarded with a special remix mode, which adds a special rap by well-known game character Parappa. With unique animation from acclaimed cartoonist Rodney Alan Greenblatt and catchy tunes from Masaya Matsuura, Um Jammer Lammy is one of the most innovative games to ever appear on the PlayStation. -Brett Atwood Pros: Kid-friendly game theme Catchy music High repeat play value Cons: May appeal to only a narrow segment of gamers.
